4 Crafts 4 Independence Day - Day 1: Red, White, and Blue Lip Gloss

July 4th is coming up! In the next 4 days, I'm going to do one craft each day and post it. I'm not sure what each one will be, but something cute, easy, and patriotic for American Independence Day.

Today, I made lip gloss in American colors.

If found a couple really easy recipes on WikiHow, and combined them. I'll probably go more in depth on how to make the lip gloss a later post. For now, I'll just show the basics.

CAUTION: This recipe requires petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a highly dangerous substance. Just kidding. It just happens to be very sticky, very oily, and very moisture-resistant. It's not recommended to wash it down the drain or anything, and it will definitely get stuck in all means of places.

Anyways, you're going to want a microwavable bowl, two normal spoons and a measuring spoon, flavoring(vanilla extract is recommended), petroleum jelly, eyeshadow, a small container, and lots of paper towels. If you're planning on making more than one color of gloss in the same batch, you'll also want some aluminum foil.

Dish about a spoonful of the petroleum jelly into the microwavable bowl.

Microwave for about 20 seconds.

Once out of the microwave, you can go ahead and mix a couple drops of the flavoring in. If you want separate flavorings, then part the petroleum jelly into different pieces. Because I used three different flavorings, I separated the jelly into three different little balls and placed all but one onto the aluminum foil. The other I left in the bowl.

For coloring, scoop a little eyeshadow into the gloss and mix. I used a teaspoon; toothpicks and other utensils can also be used. Once you've got the coloring, put the gloss into the container. Old candy containers or small jars can be used- for instance, an old Altoids container.

Now place in the refrigerator until the gloss is firm. This takes varying amount of time, depending on how much there is and what flavoring you added.

Once it's firm, you've got yourself some fabulous lip gloss!

It's always fun to add labels.
Because... labels.
